Sustainable Business Practices

Mission

As a Silver Sponsor of the Green Spa Network, Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics promotes and cultivates the vital connections between personal well-being, economic sustainability, and the health of our planet.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of wellbeing, which has environmental, economic, and social dimensions.

Sustainable Business Practices

As future professionals in the business of health and wellbeing it is helpful to understand the direct link between health of the environment and that of society. Human health is directly dependent on our natural resources and the healthy balance of the planet. The potential to be “green” pioneers in the field of esthetics is not only good for the planet but also lends credibility to your practice.

The spa industry typically utilizes environmental resources for a wide array of water-based treatments, laundry services and disposable items used in spa services making it a major consumer of water, energy, and natural resources. Adopting green practices not only reduces environmental impact, but also reduces water and energy costs and raises environmental awareness among spa clientele.

Employers Prefer Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics Graduates Who Are Eco-Savvy

We prepare our graduates for the wave of the future, equipped with knowledge of eco-friendly business practices, products and services. Our curriculum includes an emphasis on sustainable business practices.

“It’s always beneficial when new hires actively participate in a green lifestyle; it ensures that a connection already exists between the company culture and their values,” says Cici Coffee, CEO of the übergreen Natural Body Spa and Shop. Coffee of Natural Body has had success using online career services provided by schools with a stated sustainability mission, such as the Atlanta School of Massage. “Candidates from these networks show up to interviews brimming with environmental passion,” she raves. We have taken the first steps towards lowering our environmental footprint in the following areas: energy conservation, water conservation, water quality, waste management, spa protocols and retail products.

Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics has made the following improvements :

Spa Leadership: As a Guiding Star Sponsor of GSN, Atlanta Institute of Aesthetics has pledged to support the development, enhancement and refinement of the Green Spa Toolkit and SAT (Sustainability Assessment Tool).

Spa Protocols: The esthetics program transitioned to a new all natural, non- toxic skin care line, Lotus Moon, which is healthy for people and the environment.

Retail Products:

  • Comphy microfiber linens are designed to conserve water and reduce energy costs while maximizing comfort and durability.
  • 100% Pure Bath and Body products are made only with the highest quality, organic nutrients for your skin. 100% Pure formulas are all cruelty free and vegan. No artificial fragrances, synthetic chemicals, toxic preservatives, or any other unsafe ingredients.

Waste: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:

  • Recycled 576 lbs. of aluminum, 1215 lbs. of plastic and 6327 lbs. of cardboard and paper in addition to ink cartridges and batteries.
  • Reusable water bottles were given to all staff members.
  • New carpet purchased for SensAbility made of recycled materials and old carpet was recycled.
  • Marketing materials printed on paper with the highest amount of post-consumer recycled content available and printed with vegetable based non-toxic inks.
  • The SensAbility™ furnishings purchased are made of renewable woods and soy-based foam and fibers
    instead of petroleum based foam.

Laundry: Purchase only non-toxic laundry detergent.

Water Usage: Installed 40 low flow aerators on sink faucets reducing water usage by 30%.

Energy:

  • Timers placed on 3 hydroculators which reduces energy used by 25-30%.
  • Replaced approximately 100 incandescent light bulbs with CFL’s, reducing energy and costs for lighting by 80%.

Water Quality: Purchased 3 water coolers, each containing a 3-stage filter which eliminates chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, parasites and over sixty different harmful chemicals.

There are many little things we can do to make a difference. We ask that you support us in our commitment to sustainable business practices while at school.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

  • Please recycle, designated bins and baskets are located throughout the school.
  • You can recycle:
    • Paper (cups at water coolers, office, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, catalogs)
    • Plastic Containers 1-7 (located on bottom of container)
    • Cardboard (except for waxed food containers)
    • Aluminum (cans, foil)
    • Glass
  • Do not recycle:
    • Any plastic that does NOT have a recycle number on the bottom  of packaging
    • Plastic bags or plastic wrappers
    • Wax coated paper cups
    • Napkins and tissue
    • Food soiled paper
    • Styrofoam

Please do not litter.

According to one estimate, some 4.5 trillion filters from spent smokes make their way into the environment every year. Just like trash and plastic bags cigarette butts are washed down storm drains ending up in the ocean. Ingestion of plastic cigarette filters is a threat to wildlife. Plastic pieces have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures that mistake them for food. An ashtray is provided in back of the building, please dispose of butts properly.
